Ports & Harbours

Reliable hydrographic and geophysical surveys combined with metocean data collection for safer navigation and optimised operations

The ports and harbours industry plays a critical role in global trade, with regions like the Pilbara in Western Australia serving as key export hubs for commodities like iron ore. Efficient operations, supported by accurate hydrospatial information, are essential to meet the demands of high-volume shipping.

Since 2008 Revelare Hydrospatial have been providing hydrographic surveys and metocean data to a number of ports around Australia, opening insights into seabed conditions and tidal behaviour. This crucial information enables safe navigation, optimises and supports dredging efforts, and ensures port infrastructure can accommodate heavy traffic whilst increasing operational efficiency.

The ports of the Pilbara region, for instance, operate a Dynamic Under Keel Clearance® system, maximising the tonnage that can be shipped out each day based on the latest hydrographic survey data, real-time metocean data, and other key parameters.

With 98% of Australian trade carried by sea, our work plays a significant role in maintaining navigational and environmental safety for Australia’s shipping and infrastructure projects.

Metocean

We specialise in the acquisition of metocean and maritime environmental data, ensuring that ports and harbours maintain optimal performance and navigational safety in dynamic marine environments. Our surveys require advanced tide and geodetic equipment, alongside specialised metocean sensors to capture critical environmental data.

We deploy a wide range of sensors and software to collect data on sea level, tidal constituents and harmonics, wind, waves, swell, ocean salinity, temperature, conductivity, and currents, along with real-time weather monitoring.

Sea level data: Collected using specialised pressure sensors mounted on the seabed or radar sensors installed on marine or GNSS buoys deployed offshore.

Ocean currents: Collected using specialised pressure sensors mounted on the seabed or radar sensors installed on marine or GNSS buoys deployed offshore.

Seawater characteristics: Measured by sensors fixed to vessels or deployed using a moving vessel profiling winch, capturing sound velocity, sea temperature, and salinity.

Hydrographic and Geophysical

The construction, maintenance and expansion of port infrastructure relies on the advanced marine hydrographic and geophysical survey capabilities of Revelare Hydrospatial to deliver the accurate data needed to optimise dredging, ensure structural integrity, and minimise risks to operations.

Our high-resolution hydrographic surveys, surface and subsurface imaging uses tools such as multibeam echo sounders, side-scan sonar, magnetometers and sub-bottom profilers. These techniques provide detailed insights into navigable depth, seafloor conditions, sediment composition, and localisation of buried objects. With accurate bathymetric data, we help ports maintain safe shipping operations and assist in carrying out efficient dredging operations.

Our suite of geophysical tools can assist in identifying and locating submerged features and potential hazards such as obstructions, pipelines, cables, and various ferrous objects as well as providing an assessment on the thickness and volume of sediment on the seafloor.
